Introduction

Pamucak is the widest stretch of sand near Selcuk, running about five kilometers along a shore tinted dark by silt from the Cayster River mouth. Two thousand years ago, Ephesian merchant ships sailed from a harbor near this coast; the ancient port has long since silted into farmland, leaving only surf and pine groves. Because most visitors head straight for Kusadasi, the beach stays surprisingly empty even in high season, and its west-facing sunsets paint the sky orange and violet—a perfect wind-down after the ruins.

Highlights

1
Five-kilometer dark sand
River silt and dark minerals color the wide strand, spacious enough to claim a private patch of sea.
2
Ancient harbor bearing
With Ephesus' harbor silted over, this shore is the closest place to imagine its ancient shipping lanes.
3
Pine grove shade
A pine forest backs the beach, offering hammock spots when the open sand gets punishing.
4
Empty sunset theater
West-facing and blissfully uncrowded, the whole evening sky can feel like yours alone.

DistanceAbout 5 km from the Ephesus north gate and 8 km from Selcuk; a rental car is the easiest option
CostThe public strand is free; beach clubs charge but usually include loungers and showers
FacilitiesShowers, changing cabins, and jet-ski rentals operate in season; most close in the off-season
SafetyShallow, gentle water near shore, but currents shift near the river mouth—stay within easy reach of land

Best timingArrive in the late afternoon and combine swimming, dinner, and sunset in one visit

💡 Tips

There is almost no shade; after 10 a.m. the sun is fierce, so pack serious sunscreen and an umbrella.
To use showers and loungers, order at a beach club—usually better value than paying facility fees outright.
Ground between the pines is soft and can trap cars after rain; park on the firm areas.
Restaurants are scarce nearby, so bring water and snacks, and take your rubbish with you.
