Introduction

About thirty kilometres northwest of Antalya, Güllük Mountain National Park wraps the ancient city of Termessos into cliffs more than a thousand metres up the Taurus. Alexander the Great besieged it in 333 BC and gave up — the city's position, on terraces ringed by rock, was effectively untakeable, and its Solymian inhabitants knew every goat path. Today's route follows the same steep approach through olives and junipers, passing the agora and gymnasium before reaching the theatre, whose seats hang over a vertiginous drop with a valley view that feels absurd. There are no kiosks inside, so the rule for water is the same as in antiquity: carry your own.
