Introduction

Roughly two hours north of Antalya the road crests a final ridge and Eğirdir Lake opens out below — Turkey's fourth-largest freshwater lake, some 480 square kilometres of water cupped in the western Taurus. A long causeway links the lakeside town to Yeşilada island, where fishing villages and small guesthouses face two different shades of blue on either side of the road. The town climbs toward an old fortress with Byzantine-era foundations, restaurants serve the lake's famous silverfish, and orchards on the surrounding slopes supply a good share of Isparta's apples. Come at sunset to the island's western tip and watch the far shore sink into the water.
