Introduction
Urquhart Castle is a ruined medieval castle on the shore of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, set on a promontory reaching into the loch, the perfect spot to look over the most dramatic stretch of the water. The castle was founded in the Middle Ages and suffered through wars; today mostly shattered walls remain, with the Grant Tower relatively intact and the most prominent building on the site. From the battlements the loch opens up, deep and mysterious, and because of the Loch Ness Monster legend this has become a popular place to look for the creature. Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, it charges admission and has displays and viewing areas, and an hour to an hour and a half is usually enough.
