Introduction

Blue Lake lies in Mount Gambier in south-eastern South Australia and is a crater lake formed in an extinct volcano, the town's most iconic natural sight. Its most striking feature is the seasonal change of colour: from roughly November to March the water turns a vivid cobalt blue, while for the rest of the year it appears a darker grey-blue, a change linked to water-temperature layers and fine calcium carbonate particles. The lake is broad, with a walking trail and viewing platforms around it from which to look down on the water and the crater landform.
