Rottnest Island (locals call it Rotto) is a car-free holiday island off Perth, reached by ferry in about half an hour to over an hour, famous for the cute, smiling quokka, a short-tailed wallaby. This palm-sized, naturally smiling marsupial is found easily almost only on this island, and selfies with them have become a classic social-media moment. Cars are banned on the island; visitors get around by bike or island bus. Long white-sand beaches, clear bays and coral reefs suit swimming, snorkelling and surfing.
