World War II Oil Storage Tunnels

Introduction

The World War II Oil Storage Tunnels are located near Kitchener Drive in central Darwin, in Australia's Northern Territory, and are underground fuel storage facilities cut during the Second World War to counter the threat of air raids. Darwin was bombed at the time, and to protect fuel supplies, engineers excavated tunnels in the cliff face to store oil. Today the tunnels are open to visitors and lit inside, with historical photographs, documents and objects displayed along the way that tell of wartime Darwin and how the tunnels were built. They are both a site for understanding Australia's WWII history and a window into the city's wartime memory.
