Introduction

The Huon Valley lies south of Hobart, where the Huon River winds down from the south-west highlands through orchards, vineyards and old-growth forest to the channel. This is Tasmania's traditional apple and cherry country, with pick-your-own farms, wineries and artisan food producers scattered across the slopes. Deeper in the valley grow the prized Huon pine, and the Tahune AirWalk and forest walks let visitors move through the canopy. Following the B68 further south reaches Cockle Creek and the state's southernmost coast. The orchards are at their most colourful in autumn, making this one of the most popular day drives from Hobart.
