Introduction
The National Portrait Gallery sits at Parkes in Canberra's Parliamentary Triangle, across the street from the National Gallery of Australia, and is the country's only national gallery devoted to people. Its collection spans thousands of portraits from the colonial period to the present, in oil, drawing, photography, sculpture and multimedia installation, depicting everyone from politicians and athletes to artists and ordinary citizens — using individual faces to assemble a national narrative. The building is made up of several volumes, with distinctive sculpture and light at the entrance. Most exhibitions are free and the route through is clear, so it fits neatly into a half day with the Triangle's other cultural institutions.
