Introduction

Oatlands lies on Tasmania's central highlands and is one of the best-preserved Georgian towns in Australia. Along the main street more than 130 nineteenth-century sandstone buildings survive, many built by convict artisans, their warm tones and regular frontages reading like a colonial photograph brought to life. The landmark Callington Mill dates from the 1830s and is one of the few windmills in the southern hemisphere still in working order; it now also houses a distillery and visitor point, with the tower open for views over the town and surrounding pasture.
