Introduction

Mount Nelson (about 340m) is lower and gentler than Mount Wellington but far closer to Hobart's city centre, offering comfortable panoramic views over the city, the River Derwent and the coast to the south. It was the site of one of Tasmania's earliest signal stations, which for 158 years relayed messages for ships plying the Derwent day and night until operations ceased in 1969; the original signal-station building now houses a viewing restaurant.
