Introduction

On the main street of the German-settler village of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, the Hahndorf Academy occupies an 1857 red-brick heritage building that has served as a school, Lutheran seminary and hospital. Today it is the second most visited gallery in South Australia and also houses the German Migration Museum, telling the stories of the Peramangk First Nations people, Prussian German settlers and 19th-century village life. Its collections include German settler clothing, farming tools, shipping logs, musical instruments and school items, plus original charcoal drawings by artist Sir Hans Heysen who lived in Hahndorf, and it runs regular creative workshops in pottery and painting.
