Introduction

Ulverstone straddles the mouth of the Leven River on Tasmania's north coast, just off the Bass Highway between Devonport and Penguin, and is the main town of Central Coast municipality. The centre is notable for the pedestrian bridge across the Leven River, riverside paths and tidy heritage buildings, ideal for walking, fishing or watching boats at the marina. Just out of town lies the broad, family-friendly Buttons Beach, while the conservation area at Lillico Beach slightly to the east is famed for little penguins waddling ashore to nest at dusk, with volunteer guides offering a free viewing platform. A coastal cycleway also runs through the area towards Penguin and beyond, making it a good base for north-coast family and outdoor activities.
