Introduction

Brisbane Customs House at 399 Queen Street, beside the Petrie Bight bend of the river, is one of the city's most striking heritage landmarks. The grand Victorian Free Classical building was designed by Charles McLay, built by John Petrie & Son in 1886-1889, and replaced the original 1849 customs house. For roughly the next century it was the centre of Queensland's customs duties and shipping administration. Today its classical colonnades and glowing dome are especially lovely at night, and the grand Long Room is used for dinners, exhibitions and cultural events, while visitors can admire the columns, reliefs and ceilings.
