Introduction

Evandale is a National Trust-classified Georgian village about 15 minutes' drive south of Launceston in Tasmania. It retains a wealth of early-19th-century sandstone and brick buildings - the 1826 Fallgrove house, 1832 Blenheim, 1836 Solomon House and 1847 Clarendon Arms Hotel among them - giving the streets an unspoiled colonial feel. The town is also the heart of 'Glover country', named for colonial landscape painter John Glover, and hosts the renowned annual National Penny Farthing Championships and the Glover Prize art exhibition. Some 8 km south, the three-storey Clarendon mansion is celebrated as Australia's grandest rural colonial estate.
