Introduction

St Stephen's Cathedral on Elizabeth Street is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane. Built in stages from a 1863 foundation, this Gothic Revival cathedral rose by stages - the nave rose in 1870-1874 and was opened in 1874, with twin spires completed in 1884, all built in porphyry and freestone. It stands alongside the older Old St Stephen's at the corner, together forming one of Brisbane's oldest surviving religious complexes. The cathedral houses one of Queensland's largest and finest pipe organs, and its stained-glass windows and stonework are well worth admiring.
