Introduction

The Old Windmill (also known as Windmill Tower or the Brisbane Observatory) in Observatory Park at 226 Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill, is the oldest surviving building in Queensland. Built by convicts around 1828 from sandstone, it was intended as a flour mill but sat in a spot with too little wind, so a convict-powered treadmill was installed to grind grain instead. Over time it served as a time-signal tower and, in the 1860s, was adapted as a signal tower; it later became an observatory. Now a heritage landmark, it is a potent symbol of Brisbane's convict origins.
