Introduction

Housed in a building at 1 Finnerty Street that convict labourers built from local stone between 1861 and 1868, the Fremantle Arts Centre grew out of the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum. Over the years the complex served as a women's home and maternity training school, a billet for US naval servicemen and a technical school before reopening as an arts centre in 1973. Today it is one of Western Australia's leading arts organisations, with a year-round program of contemporary art exhibitions, concerts and events plus professional art classes, all set within a striking heritage Gothic building.
