Introduction

Old Government House stands on the QUT Gardens Point campus beside the Brisbane River at the foot of Queen Street. Completed in 1862, it was one of the colony's earliest major public buildings and the centre of 19th-century political and social life in Queensland. For almost half a century it was the official residence of Queensland's first eleven governors, where laws were made, grand balls were held and royalty stayed. A fine example of Classical Revival architecture adapted for the tropics, it is known for its wide verandas, high ceilings and iron-and-sandstone construction, retaining many rare finishes. Now lovingly restored as a house museum open to the public, it became the first building protected under Queensland heritage legislation in 1978.
