St Francis Xavier Cathedral stands on Wakefield Street east of Victoria Square in central Adelaide, as the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide. Its earliest foundations date to 1851, but construction stalled after the withdrawal of state religious funding and the outflow of money during the gold rushes; a new foundation stone was laid in 1856 and the main body was finally built by 1858, making it one of Australia's earliest cathedrals and one of the nation's oldest Catholic cathedrals. The Gothic Revival facade is richly carved, while the grand interior arches are matched by numerous monuments to saints; the soaring spires were completed much later, only being finished in 1996.
