Introduction

Perth Queens Gardens, at the corner of Hay and Hale Streets in East Perth, is an elegant historic garden on the eastern edge of the city centre. Between 1860 and 1890 the site was a clay mine and brickworks that produced the bricks for many of Perth's most iconic buildings; it officially opened as Queens Gardens in 1899, named in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The lakes and lawns the visitor admires today were once the clay pits left by mining. Near the Swan River, the garden holds a replica of the famous Peter Pan statue from London's Kensington Gardens, with paths and lawns memorialising WA's early pioneers — a popular retreat for locals and visitors alike.
