Introduction

Saint Andrew's Uniting Church stands at the busy corner of Ann and Creek Streets in central Brisbane. Its predecessor, the Presbyterian congregation of St Andrew's, was established in 1862; the original building across the street was resumed and demolished by the city at the end of the 19th century to make way for the railway, and the present red-brick church was built in 1905 as its replacement. After the Uniting Church in Australia was formed in 1977 by the union of Methodist, most Congregational and some Presbyterian churches, St Andrew's (formerly Presbyterian) amalgamated in 1981 with the Ann Street City congregation (formerly Congregational) to create today's Saint Andrew's Uniting Church, whose roots reach back to colonial-era Brisbane of 1859.
