Introduction

Langley Park lies along the northern bank of the Swan River in central Perth and is the city's largest grassed events venue. The green space was created by land reclamation between 1921 and 1935; in the 1920s it served as an airstrip when aviator Norman Brearley pioneered civil aviation in Western Australia and it was the departure point for the state's first regular airmail service. In 1937 it was named after acting Lord Mayor Thomas William Langley. Today Langley Park is a classic venue for major events such as the Australia Day Skyworks and Symphony in the City, and it was the launch site for the 2010 Red Bull Air Race.
