Introduction

The Rottnest Island Museum, now known as the Wadjemup Museum, sits within the historic gaol buildings in the Main Settlement of Rottnest Island (Wadjemup), about 19 km off Perth. Through photographs, artefacts and multimedia it tells the story of the island's rich past — including the sombre history of Aboriginal imprisonment here, natural-history exhibits such as an old lighthouse keeper's jacket and whale bones, images and stories of holidaymakers over the past century, and contemporary milestones such as the island's use for COVID-19 quarantine in 2020.
