Introduction

Alma Park Zoo was a private wildlife park in Dakabin, north of Brisbane, opened in 1969 and covering about 16 hectares (40 acres), housing some 53 species and around 229 animals. Known as Queensland's oldest zoo, it was fully landscaped with walking paths beneath a canopy of tropical rainforest trees and plants, letting visitors see native Australian animals such as koalas, kangaroos and emus as well as exotic species like red pandas, ring-tailed lemurs and pygmy marmosets. The zoo permanently closed on 31 March 2014; many of its animals were transferred to Wildlife HQ Zoo near the Big Pineapple on the Sunshine Coast, and the original site has largely been redeveloped for housing, retaining an ecological green space called the Alma Sanctuary Reserve.
