Introduction

Edmund Wright House is one of the most ornate historic buildings on King William Street, Adelaide, built in 1878 as the headquarters of the Bank of South Australia. It was designed by Lloyd Taylor of Melbourne together with Adelaide architect Edmund Wright, after whom the building was later named. In a Victorian Renaissance Revival style, its facade is richly decorated with stonework carved by well-known Scottish sculptor William Maxwell and others. When the site faced demolition in 1971, public outcry led the State Government to buy and restore it. Today it stands as a major piece of Adelaide's architectural heritage.
