Introduction

The Barracks Arch stands at the western end of St Georges Terrace, Perth, a lasting symbol of the city's colonial and architectural heritage. Designed in a Victorian Tudor Gothic Revival style by colonial architect Richard Roach Jewell, the arch is the sole surviving remnant of the Pensioner Barracks complex, which housed the British pensioner guards who accompanied convict transports. Today it is a treasured landmark and heritage sight.
