Introduction

The Commissariat Store Museum on William Street, Brisbane, occupies the oldest habitable and most significant heritage building in Queensland, and is one of the few surviving structures of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement (1824-42). Completed in 1829, the building was constructed by convicts from Brisbane tuff stone quarried at Kangaroo Point Cliffs to store and distribute provisions. Today it holds permanent exhibitions on convict and colonial Queensland, plus displays on General Douglas MacArthur and the million US service personnel who passed through Brisbane in WWII, and houses the Welsby Library.
