Introduction

This St John's Anglican Cathedral in Parramatta, west of central Sydney, sits on the oldest church site in Australia and is regarded as the oldest continuously used place of Christian worship in the country. In 1797 or 1798 Governor Hunter laid a foundation stone for the parish church, and a substantial church had been erected by about 1800; the main building dates from roughly 1803 and reflects early colonial church architecture.
