Introduction

The Old Perth Boys School at 139 St George's Terrace, Perth, was built in 1854 using convict labour and is the oldest government-built education building in Western Australia, as well as the Swan River Colony's first permanent school. Constructed of sandstone ferried up the Swan River, the narrow, church-like building reflects the Gothic Revival style and was extended in 1868; it served as the Perth Boys School and then the Perth Technical College (a predecessor of WAIT and Curtin University). Now managed by the National Trust of WA, its ground floor operates as a licensed cafe and wine bar.
