Introduction

Government House Sydney sits on the edge of the Royal Botanic Garden overlooking Sydney Harbour and is the official residence of the Governor of New South Wales. Designed by English architect Edward Blore in Gothic Revival style, it is one of the oldest buildings in Australia. The State Rooms, dining room and ballroom are richly decorated, with murals by Lyon & Cottier from 1879 on the walls, and the grounds contain a magnificent Moreton Bay fig tree planted over 170 years ago. It has been open to the public since 1996 with regular free guided tours.
