Introduction

Macquarie Lighthouse stands on the cliffs of South Head in Sydney's Vaucluse, ordered by Governor Lachlan Macquarie and designed by convict architect Francis Greenway. First lit in November 1818, it is Australia's first and longest-serving navigational lighthouse. Because of crumbling foundations it was rebuilt on the original site in the 1880s by colonial architect James Barnet to closely match Greenway's design; the tower stands about 26 metres tall and remains operational, offering sweeping views over the Pacific and the entrance to Sydney Harbour.
