Introduction

Cockatoo Island (Wareamah) sits in the heart of Sydney Harbour and is one of the harbour's largest islands. Used as a convict penal establishment in the 19th century, it later developed into a naval and government dockyard that witnessed over two centuries of maritime industry; it became the Royal Australian Navy's principal dockyard in 1913 and a key ship-repair hub of the South-West Pacific during WWII until commercial operations ended in 1992. In 2010 the island's convict precinct was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of eleven Australian Convict Sites. Today it is reached by ferry from Circular Quay, where visitors explore sandstone buildings, dry docks and shipyards and can even camp overnight.
