Introduction

The Olympic Stadium, now known as Accor Stadium (formerly Stadium Australia), is in Sydney Olympic Park and was purpose-built as the main stadium and centrepiece of the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Opened in March 1999 at a cost of about A$690 million, it is distinguished by its signature steel arches and translucent roof. Originally seating roughly 110,000 - then the largest outdoor Olympic stadium built to date - it was reconfigured from 2003 to about 80,000 seats (now around 84,000). The 2000 opening and closing ceremonies and track-and-field events were held here, including Cathy Freeman's historic 400m gold medal.
