Paddington Reservoir Gardens at 251-255 Oxford Street is a state heritage-listed sunken garden. The Paddington Reservoir formed part of Sydney's water supply from 1878 until 1899, when it was superseded by a newer reservoir at nearby Centennial Park; after decommissioning it was used for storage, as workshops and even as a service station. Restored around the turn of the century, the site was reopened as an award-winning 'sunken garden' formed of two brick-vaulted chambers, each about 33 by 31 metres, with a shallow reflecting pond at the centre - a hidden oasis in inner-city Sydney.
