Introduction

Garrison Church, also known as Holy Trinity Church, stands at 60 Lower Fort Street in Millers Point within The Rocks. Its foundation stone was laid in 1840 to designs by Henry Ginn, and it was the first military church built in the Australian colonies, so named because British Imperial troops stationed at nearby Dawes Point Battery attended services here. From 1855 the church was enlarged and strengthened by architect Edmund Blacket - who also designed the Great Hall of the University of Sydney - with work completed in 1878 to seat 600. Regimental plaques and fine timber detailing record its military and community history.
