Introduction

Vaucluse House is a historic harbourside estate at 69a Wentworth Road in the Sydney suburb of Vaucluse, begun in 1803 and best known as the home of William Charles Wentworth - father of the Constitution of New South Wales - his wife Sarah and their ten children from 1827-1853 and again in 1861-62. The suburb takes its name from the house. This Gothic Revival mansion combines lavish entertaining rooms with functional 'downstairs' service areas, surrounded by about ten hectares of formal gardens and grounds. Opened as a museum in 1915, it is managed by Museums of History NSW and is one of Sydney's few intact 19th-century harbourside estates.
