Introduction

The Museum of Sydney (MOS) stands at the corner of Phillip and Bridge Streets, built over and around the remains of the First Government House erected for Governor Arthur Phillip in 1788, and opened to the public in 1995. The site was the heart of the colony's administrative and social life and a focal point of first contact between the Gadigal people and the colonisers. Run by Museums of History NSW, the museum explores the character, cultures and soul of the city through permanent displays, changing exhibitions, events and conversations.
