Introduction
Refinery Artspace on Hardy Street is one of central Nelson's principal contemporary art venues. Housed in a converted industrial building, it keeps its raw structure and tall gallery spaces, and runs a rotating programme of group and solo shows by local and national artists alongside community workshops. Exhibits span painting, printmaking, ceramics, installation and photography, and most are free to enter. A regular venue for events such as the Nelson Arts Festival, it is an easy window onto the contemporary art scene of the northern South Island, within walking distance of the main shopping street and gallery cluster.
