Introduction

Siyu Fort, in the village of Siyu on Pate Island in the Lamu Archipelago, Kenya, is the best-preserved historic fort in the archipelago. Unlike the Portuguese castles at Mombasa and Lamu, this fort was built of coral stone in the 19th century by local Swahili leader Bwana Mataka to resist Omani influence, making it a rare surviving witness to a local uprising.
