Lamu is a seaside old town on Lamu Island off Kenya's northeastern coast, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and one of East Africa's best-preserved Swahili settlements, continuously inhabited for over 700 years. There are no motor vehicles here: alleys are narrow and winding, and residents travel on foot or by donkey, earning the island the nickname the island of donkeys. The old town is famed for its coral-stone buildings, elaborately carved wooden doors and more than twenty mosques, the very source of the Swahili language and culture. Lamu Fort, the seafront and calm islets complete a deeply atmospheric visit.

Lamu Old Town
Lamu Old Town, on the island of Lamu in the Indian Ocean, is one of East Africa's oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlements and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. Built along the sea, the old town retains narrow coral-stone lanes, carved wooden doors and well-preserved Swahili-Arabic architecture. There are no motor vehicles in the old town; movement is by foot, donkey and dhow.

Siyu Fort
Siyu Fort, in the village of Siyu on Pate Island in the Lamu Archipelago, Kenya, is the best-preserved historic fort in the archipelago. Unlike the Portuguese castles at Mombasa and Lamu, this fort was built of coral stone in the 19th century by local Swahili leader Bwana Mataka to resist Omani influence, making it a rare surviving witness to a local uprising. Numerous old tombs and mosque ruins surround it.
