Tsavo Travel Guide

Tsavo National Park is a vast park in southeast Kenya between Nairobi and Mombasa, among the country's largest wildlife reserves (split into Tsavo East and West), known for desolate magnificent primitive wilderness, unique red-dirt elephants and rich wildlife. Dry seasons Jun–Oct and Jan–Feb are best. The most distinctive mark is the red elephants — local soil is rich in red volcanic dust; elephants roll and toss dust for sun and insect protection, dyeing their skin brick-red, a memorable classic sight roaming the vast wilderness. Also lion (famous Tsavo man-eaters legend), buffalo, giraffe, etc., plus black lava landforms, Mzima Springs with underwater hippo/fish viewing, winding rivers and hills. Vast area, dispersed animals — a more primal wilderness feel. Lowland fairly hot — sun protection.
