Just ~7 km from the city centre, Nairobi National Park is the only wildlife reserve bordering a capital. Lions, rhinos, giraffes and zebras roam the savanna with the skyline behind them, and Kilimanjaro's snows are visible on clear days—urban meets wilderness in minutes.

The Giraffe Centre breeds endangered Rothschild's giraffes; visitors feed them from a raised platform—one of Nairobi's gentlest family experiences.

Amboseli National Park lies in southern Kenya on the Tanzanian border, famed for the elephants that wander beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro — the best place in East Africa to see tuskers up close. Lake Amboseli is a dry salt pan that fills briefly in the rains, drawing elephants, zebras and buffalo to the Enkongo Narok swamps. Climb Observation Hill at sunrise for the classic "snows of the equator" shot. Stay at an in-park camp; game is most active at dawn and dusk.
