Lake Nakuru National Park is in central Kenya's Great Rift Valley, built around the alkaline Lake Nakuru. Once famous for millions of pink flamingos, it is now an important rhino reserve. Dry seasons Jun–Oct and Jan–Feb are best. The soda lake nourishes abundant algae, the flamingos' main food; historically it dyed the shores spectacular pink, hailed as one of the world's greatest bird spectacles (recently numbers vary with water level, but flocks can still be seen). The park carefully protects rare black and white rhinos, with good viewing chances, plus occasional tree-climbing lions, endangered Rothschild giraffe, buffalo, zebra and many waterbirds; viewpoints overlook the rift soda lake. About 2.5–3 hrs from Nairobi.
