Samburu National Reserve, in Kenya's dry north, is a rugged semi-desert wilderness crossed by the Ewaso Ng'iro River, a prime spot to watch animals drink. It shelters the “Samburu Special Five”—reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, East African oryx and Somali ostrich—rarely seen further south. Lions, leopards and elephants also roam here, a favourite with seasoned safari-goers.
