Introduction

The Tangier Kasbah (castle/old-town citadel quarter) crowns the highest point of the Tangier old town. First built by the Phoenicians and later expanded and remodelled by Arabs and Portuguese, it is the city's defensive core. Its winding lanes thread through traditional white-washed houses with blue shutters, and the outlook is superb - lines of sight reach across the harbour to the Spanish coast, only about 14 km away across the Strait of Gibraltar. At its heart stands the former sultan's palace Dar El Makhzen, now the Museum of Moroccan Arts, displaying rugs, pottery, weapons, coins and Andalusian musical instruments.
