Smuts House Museum

Introduction

The Smuts House Museum is the former residence of South African Prime Minister General Jan Smuts, located in the tranquil Irene farm area south of Pretoria. This white farmhouse, originally built in the 1830s, was home to the Smuts family for over forty years. The museum preserves Smuts' private study, library, and numerous historical artifacts, presenting the multifaceted life of this statesman, soldier, and botanist. Smuts was a founding father of the Commonwealth, a co-creator of the United Nations, and simultaneously a researcher of South African indigenous plants. His complex and legendary journey is comprehensively displayed here. The garden outside features indigenous plants he personally collected, in a serene and elegant setting.
