Victor Verster Prison, also known as Groot Drakenstein Prison, is a historic former prison in the Cape Winelands Franschhoek valley that once held numerous political prisoners including Nelson Mandela. After Robben Island and Pollsmoor Prison, Mandela was transferred here in 1988 for his final two years of imprisonment before his release in 1990, making this prison an important witness to South Africa's democratic transition.
