Pollsmoor Prison

Introduction

Pollsmoor Prison is a notorious maximum-security prison in Cape Town, famous for having held Nelson Mandela and numerous political prisoners. Mandela was transferred here from Robben Island in 1982 and spent six years at this facility, during which he continued leading the anti-apartheid movement and drafted his autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom." The prison complex is massive and forbidding, surrounded by high walls and razor wire, with an austere and solemn exterior. Although now partially decommissioned, the prison remains remembered as an important node in South Africa's judicial history. Mandela's deteriorating health during his time here drew intense international attention, accelerating the end of the apartheid regime. Together with Robben Island and Victor Verster Prison, Pollsmoor forms one of three important stations on Mandela's imprisonment journey.
