Base Torres (Torres del Paine)

Introduction

The Base of the Torres, at the northeastern corner of Torres del Paine National Park, is South America's classic hike destination. Three granite towers — the tallest about 2,850 metres — rise from the head of a glacial U-valley like swords into the sky. From Camping Las Torres the round trip runs about 22 km with over 900 metres of gain: river valleys and southern beech forest first, a steep moraine ridge, then a final boulder scramble on all fours. When dawn light sets the towers on fire and the mint-green glacial lake mirrors all three at once, every aching step is forgotten. The season runs November to March, but Patagonian weather flips without warning — windproof layers, trekking poles and extra food are standard kit; check the forecast before setting out.
